US EPA Releases Remedial Investigation Report for St. Louis
The Remedial Investigation report for Operable Unit 3, or OU3, and portions of OU4 is complete. The Remedial Investigation evaluates the nature and extent of contamination along with determining the risk to human and wildlife. OU3 extends approximately 1.5 miles downstream from the St. Louis, Michigan dam. It includes sediment, riverbanks and four floodplains within the Pine River. The OU4 Remedial Investigation is ongoing and is located from the boundary of OU3 to the Chippewa River. EPA has determined that an unacceptable level of contamination is present in OU3 in riverbanks and floodplains. EPA is currently evaluating OU3 cleanup alternatives to address this unacceptable risk, mainly to wildlife. The alternatives are evaluated in a document called a Feasibility Study. This document should be available in early February. EPA will issue its proposed cleanup plan for public comment in late spring or early summer.
