US EPA Seeks Comments on Revised Plans - Due by Aug. 13!
EPA Announces Revisions to Cleanup Plan for the Velsicol Chemical Superfund Site in St. Louis, Michigan
Seeking Public Comments by August 13, 2024
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has updated the Velsicol Chemical Superfund site cleanup plan. The revised plan includes two components:
Repairing the existing slurry wall, which is part of the wall containment around the former plant site.
Removing the need to extend a collection system around monitoring well 19.
EPA is providing the public an opportunity to comment on the changes described in an explanation of significant differences report, or ESD. To review the ESD, follow this link. EPA is opening a 30-day public comment period with the issuance of the proposed ESD. EPA will respond to comments received during this period in a Responsiveness Summary, which will be included as an attachment to the final ESD. There are several ways to submit a comment:
Mail to Diane Russell, Community Involvement Coordinator, U.S. EPA Region 5, 1300 Bluff St., Suite 105, Flint, MI 48504.
Attend the public meeting on 7/31 and submit an oral comment.
Go to www.epa.gov/superfund/velsicol-chemical-michigan and click the “Public Comment Form” and fill out.
Comments must be received before midnight on August 13th, 2024.
If you have questions or want to learn more, EPA is hosting an availability session and meeting on Wednesday, July 31. Following the availability session where you can speak one-on-one with EPA representatives, EPA will make a formal presentation about the ESD followed by a question-and-answer period. The meeting will conclude with time to receive comments from the public, recorded by a court reporter.
The availability session and meeting will be located at the Community Room in City Hall, 300 N. Mill St., St. Louis, Mich. at the following times on Wednesday, July 31:
Availability session 5-6:30 p.m.
Public meeting/formal presentation 7-8 p.m.
Public comments 8-8:30 p.m.
